Police Officer - Recruit (Currently Attending Academy)

  • Definition: This non-sworn training position learns general police work and, under close supervision, participates in a comprehensive training program at a P.O.S.T. approved police academy.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Class Characteristics:

  • This position is an entry-level, non-sworn position in the Police Department.
  • Incumbents are currently attending a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy and must satisfactorily pass all of the requirements that lead to the possession of the P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in addition to passing all phases of the background process before becoming candidates for the sworn position of Police Officer.
  • Appointment in this position is limited to the duration of the Police Academy.
  • Academic progress and physical achievement are closely monitored during this training period.
  • Upon successful completion and graduation from the Police Academy, recruits shall be appointed to the position of probationary Police Officer.
  • An assignment to this classification is temporary. Failure to graduate from the academy within the prescribed training period will result in termination from City of Stockton employment.

Principle Duties (Illustrative Only):

  • Performs law enforcement and crime prevention work.
  • Attends Academy and other related training.
  • Controls traffic flow and enforces state laws and local municipal code violations and traffic regulations.
  • Performs investigative work. Participates in and provides support and assistance to special crime prevention and enforcement programs.
  • Performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the department.
  • Provides information, directions, and assistance to the public in a variety of situations; takes reports and assists the public with complaints or unusual situations.
  • Observes, monitors, and controls routine and unusual traffic situations; provides direction and traffic control in accident or incident situations, special events, or other congested situations.

Police Officer Trainee

  • Class Code: 25740
  • $4,840.27 - $4,840.27 Monthly

This is a non-sworn training position. Incumbents attend a police academy to train for general police work and perform other related work as assigned.

 

Class Characteristics: 

  • This position is an entry-level, non-sworn position in the Police Department.
  • Incumbents are assigned to the Basic Peace Officer Academy and must satisfactorily pass all of the requirements that lead to the possession of the Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training Certificate before becoming candidates for the sworn position of Police Officer.
  • Assignment to this classification is temporary. If incumbents do not successfully complete a police academy, they will be terminated.

 

Principal Duties (Illustrative Only):

Attend and successfully complete a police academy to prepare for the position of Police Officer.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Experience:
  • Graduation from a United States high school or possession of a GED certificate received from a recognized accrediting association.

Other Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age by the time of appointment.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent alien who has applied for citizenship prior to applying for the position of Police Officer Trainee.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, which shall include a polygraph and psychological examination, and a fingerprint clearance.
  • Must be able to pass a physical examination, which includes a drug screen, administered by the City Physician. Vision requirements are 20/100 uncorrected; 20/30 corrected.
  • Color blindness will be cause for rejection.
  • Hearing must be within normal range -- 5/5.

 

Knowledge of:
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Skill in:
  • Writing clearly, accurately, concisely, legibly, and with correct grammatical construction and spelling;
  • Observing, assimilating, remembering, and recalling pertinent facts and details;
  • Ability to learn to read maps and mapping information.

 

Ability to:
  • Learn the principles, practices, procedures, laws and ordinances, terminology, and operation of equipment used in law enforcement, crime prevention, and investigation.
  • When the Police Trainee position re-opens, you will receive an email notification from Human Resources, instructing you to apply.
  • It will also contain information about the Trainee Orientation Workshops that we offer.  


We hold several of these workshops prior to the test date. 

  • At the workshop, you will have the opportunity to practice climbing the 5 ½' wall and you will be able to practice the "dummy drag" (more information about this will be given when the Trainee position re-opens).
  • Also, there are a variety of study guides available online and at local bookstores, to help you prepare for the California POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery "PELLETB" exam.
